The project aims to modernize agriculture through more efficient and effective Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS), through improving the capacities of AKIS actors to leverage the individual, organizational and systemic resources needed to transform towards more coherent, effective and efficient AKIS systems and transition to a more sustainable management and use of natural resources in agriculture and forestry.

To this end, it will establish and promote a European network of at least 1,000 key AKIS actors, including the AKIS coordinating bodies, from all EU Member States, which will act as cornerstones in the transformation of AKIS systems towards more effective governance and the modernisation of the European agri-food sector.

The project will also enhance the capabilities of these key AKIS actors in terms of systems understanding and participation, allowing them to change systems in the long term, improving AKIS.

In addition, it will create at least 1 Community of Practice in each Member State, thus allowing participants to act as agents of change in their communities. modernAKIS will also provide a comprehensive digital catalogue with new know-how and at least 80 tools and methods that will support the key AKIS actors to improve knowledge flows and develop a well-functioning AKIS in line with the relevant policy objectives, e.g. the Green Deal, Farm2Fork, the Sustainable Development Goals.
